Frequently Asked Questions

Making bookmarks, fridge magnets or something new? Real answers from our print floor. No vague craft-blog fluff.

🧲 Which magnets should I use for magnetic bookmarks?

Our self-adhesive round magnets are the right choice. They come with strong adhesive already applied, so there's no glue or messing about. Peel, stick, done.

Two thicknesses to choose from:

1mm for slim, everyday magnetic bookmarks. Our studio standard.

2mm for a stronger snap, a thicker feel, or when you're laminating with heavier material.

📏 What's the difference between 1mm and 2mm round magnets?

The numbers refer to thickness. Both are 20mm (2cm) in diameter.

1mm is slimmer, lighter and keeps the bookmark profile thin. Strong enough for standard paper-and-laminate bookmarks. This is what we use for most of our own range.

2mm is noticeably thicker and stronger. Use it when you want the bookmark to snap firmly closed, when you're using thicker 310gsm photo paper, or when you're making something larger than a standard bookmark.

Pricing is identical. It's a feel decision, not a budget one.

📐 What size are the round magnets?

20mm diameter (2cm across). Thickness is either 1mm or 2mm depending on which you choose.

20mm is the sweet spot for magnetic bookmarks. Big enough to give a confident snap, small enough to stay hidden inside the bookmark fold without adding visible bulk at the edges.

🖨️ Can I print directly onto magnetic sheets?

No. Magnetic sheets are not printable. Printing directly onto them will not work and can damage your printer.

The correct workflow: print your design onto printable vinyl sticker paper, laminate if needed, then apply the vinyl sticker to the surface of the magnetic sheet. Cut to your final shape.

This gives you a clean printed surface with a magnetic backing.

✂️ Can I cut magnetic sheets with a cutting machine?

Yes. Cricut, Silhouette and Siser Juliet will all cut our 0.5mm magnetic sheets.

A few things to get right:

Use a 60 degree blade or a deep cut blade. The standard fine-point blade will struggle.

Increase pressure to the highest setting for your machine.

Run two or three passes rather than one. Magnetic material is thicker than vinyl and needs the repeated cut.

Scissors and a craft knife also work well for straight lines and simple shapes.

🔖 How many magnets do I need per bookmark?

Two magnets per bookmark. One at each end of the fold so they meet and snap together around the page.

A single magnet won't hold a bookmark closed on its own.

Our 1mm pack and 2mm pack list quantities on each product page, so you can work out exactly how many bookmarks a pack will make before ordering.

🧭 How do I get the magnets to face each other correctly?

Every magnet has two poles, north and south. Opposite poles attract, same poles repel. You want opposite poles facing each other so the bookmark snaps shut firmly.

Our studio trick: put two magnets together and twist until they pull tight and snap into their strongest position. This is usually a 'Z shape' where they align fully. That's your correct orientation.

A second trick: peel one magnet off the backing sheet and stick it in place on one side of the bookmark. Then peel the magnet directly above it from the same sheet. Because they came off stacked together, their poles will already be in the right orientation when you stick the second one down.

🛡️ Should I laminate my bookmark before applying the magnets?

Yes, always. Laminate first, trim to shape, then stick the magnets on the inside of the folded bookmark.

Laminating first gives you water resistance, scratch protection, a professional feel, and clean sealed edges. Our thermal laminating pouches are the studio go-to for this.

If you apply magnets before laminating, the laminator rollers will be forced over the raised magnet surface. Best case, you get an uneven laminate. Worst case, you damage your laminator.

🧊 How do I make fridge magnets using magnetic sheets?

Five steps:

1. Print your design onto printable vinyl sticker paper.

2. Laminate with a self-adhesive laminate of your choice. Gloss, matte, holographic all work.

3. Peel the vinyl and apply it to the smooth (non-magnetic) side of our A4 magnetic sheet.

4. Cut out your shape using scissors, a craft knife or a cutting machine with the settings listed above.

5. Stick it on a fridge, file cabinet, metal tin or any ferrous surface.

📦 Do the magnets come with adhesive already on them?

Our 1mm and 2mm round magnets are self-adhesive. Peel the backing and stick directly onto your bookmark or project. No glue needed.

Our A4 magnetic sheets are not adhesive. They're designed to receive a printed vinyl sticker on the non-magnetic side, which acts as the bonded print layer. If you need adhesive backing on a magnetic sheet, apply vinyl sticker paper first.

💪 How strong are your magnets?

Strong enough to grip through a laminated bookmark and hold pages confidently. Not so strong that you'll fight to open a bookmark or damage the paper.

The 2mm magnets are noticeably snappier than the 1mm when you close a bookmark around a page. You'll feel it immediately.

For fridge magnets, the 0.5mm magnetic sheet will hold lightweight paper, small notes and thin cards confidently. It is not strong enough to hold a heavy object like a photo frame.

🗂️ How should I store magnets between uses?

Keep them on the original backing sheet until you're ready to use them. The backing keeps the magnets aligned and keeps the adhesive clean.

Store flat, at room temperature, away from direct heat and moisture.

Keep magnets away from electronic devices, credit cards, computer hard drives and anything with magnetic storage. They can corrupt or damage sensitive items on contact.

⚠️ Are there any safety warnings I should know?

Yes, worth reading.

Not suitable for children under 3. Small magnets are a choking hazard. If swallowed, multiple magnets can cause serious internal injury. Seek immediate medical attention.

Keep away from pacemakers and medical implants. Magnets can interfere with pacemaker function and other implanted electronic medical devices.

Keep away from credit cards, hotel keys and magnetic-strip ID cards. Direct contact can wipe the magnetic stripe.

Keep away from computer drives, SSDs, phones and tablets. Strong magnets can corrupt or damage data and internal components.

💼 Can I sell magnetic bookmarks I make with these?

Yes. All our magnets, magnetic sheets, papers and laminates are sold for commercial use. Markets, craft fairs, Etsy, online shops and wholesale are all allowed.

If you're selling to the public, include the safety warnings above in your product listings and on packaging. Especially "not suitable for children under 3".

The only restriction is on your artwork: you can't print and sell copyrighted book covers, characters or licensed designs you don't own rights to. The supplies themselves have no restrictions.

🎯 Can I use these magnets on fabric, wood or painted surfaces?

The magnets themselves will stick to anything ferrous (iron, steel, some stainless steels). They won't stick to aluminium, brass, copper, wood, plastic, fabric or most painted walls.

The self-adhesive backing will bond to most clean, smooth, dry surfaces including paper, card, laminated prints, wood, glass and metal. It will not bond well to fabric, silicone, oily surfaces or textured plasters.

Press firmly for 10 to 15 seconds when applying to activate the adhesive bond.
